  • Mediterranean wild thyme is scientifically known as Thymbra capitata. It is also commonly called Conehead thyme, Headed Savory, or Mediterranean thyme.

Thymbra capitata is a perennial, evergreen shrub that can reach a height of up to 0.25 meters. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is native to the Mediterranean region. The plant has a rising and narrow stem, with green, dotted leaves that can grow up to 12 mm in length. The flowers are pink and long, with a clustered shape at the ends of the stems. It is pollinated by bees, flies, and lepidoptera, and blooms from June to August.

Mediterranean wild thyme prefers dry and calcareous soils as its habitat. It is widely distributed in Europe and the Mediterranean region. The plant has an aromatic smell due to the volatile oils it contains, which also has moderate cytotoxicity and antimicrobial effects. It is commonly used as a condiment and flavoring agent, and the leaves and essential oil obtained from them have antiseptic, deodorant, and disinfectant properties. The plant can be used fresh in salads or to extract volatile oils. However, the essential oil is not used in aromatherapy due to its irritant effect on mucous membranes. Additionally, Mediterranean wild thyme is known for contributing to the production of high-quality honey.

Overall, Mediterranean wild thyme is a versatile plant with culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. It is easy to grow and adds a fragrant touch to various dishes and drinks. Its low-growing, spreading habit makes it suitable for small spaces or as a ground cover in gardens. Moreover, its vibrant pink flowers attract bees and butterflies, contributing to biodiversity in the garden.
